Throughout this book, digital practices in early childhood education (ECE) in developed countries are discussed. However, in many countries around the world there are still issues of access to technology at many levels, such as physical access or lack of digital skills and usage. The term that is used to describe this gap is the digital divide, originally coined in the USA by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration in 1999.
