Imagination and Creativity in Digital Environments
Imagination and Creativity in Digital Environments
Introduction
In this chapter, we consider the relationship between children’s imagination and their play in digital environments. The chapter:
- conceptualises imagination and creativity through the theory of possibility thinking, examining how the different features of possibility thinking may be impacted in digital play environments;
- examines debates around originality and imagination that pre-date the introduction of digital play environments, and introduces the concepts of ‘remix’ and ‘mash-up’ as ways of thinking about imagination in digital play;
- introduces the notion of ‘transgressive play’, which is children’s play that goes beyond the expectations of the designers of digital play environments, and therefore constitutes a positive demonstration of the imagination that children can bring to digital play.
