This chapter investigates the urban strategies pursued by Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, in order to attain world city status. It focuses on the ways in which the city is using culture-based urban development and spectacular architecture to attain this goal. By analyzing the Cultural District of Saadiyat Island, the author offers a comprehensive view of how the rhetoric of the various stakeholders masks the extent to which they are deeply embedded in a late-capitalist discourse, which views culture as a marketable commodity.
