This chapter attempts to open up some implications of considering cultural conflict and values from a relational perspective, with particular reference to Emmanuel Levinas, the French philosopher. Levinas speaks of the importance of accepting, without attempting to know, the Other's otherness. Using his ideas, I examine the implications for psychotherapy and counselling of a more macro view of cultures in conflict, including the potential of some implicit values of the therapeutic relationship for exacerbating, rather than mitigating, cultural conflict.
