Critical Issues in Psychotherapy examines new and existing models in psychotherapy and presents them in an accessible manner to the practitioner in training through illustrative therapy cases and practitioner commentaries. There are many new models that have emerged in psychotherapy in recent years; however; they have not often been made accessible to front line practitioners.

Commentary: New Bottles, Old Wine?
Although we did not agree with all of the concepts presented by Slife and Reber, their chapter offers a theoretical and philosophical analysis of psychotherapy. As a profession, psychology has been so busy expanding practice opportunities and attempting to demonstrate efficacy that most of us have spent precious little time thinking carefully and systematically about the conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of our work. Slife and Reber have done us a favor by calling attention to the fact that our assumptions—be they systematic or seat-of-the-pants, eclectic or single theory, carefully delineated or automatic and unconscious—indeed influence our actions and clients' outcomes.
