Types of Societies, Types of Communication
In previous chapters we have noted in passing the close, almost tautological relationship existing between type of society and type of communication prevailing in society (see, for instance, section 2.3). A given technology of communication admits a given type of society. A given type of society calls for a special type of communication.
So-called primitive societies may have quite efficient technologies for mediated communication over space, sometimes even over fairly large distances (beacons, smoke signals or drumming, for instance). They may also have some means of communication over time: tombs, memorial stones, etc. (see section 2.3).
