MTV is an advertiser-supported cable television channel dedicated to the programming of record company-produced music video clips for a target audience ages 12 to 34. MTV premiered on cable television systems on August 21, 1981, at 12:01 a.m. EST with a video of the song, “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggies. Although no early ratings were available, MTV's premiere was carried by 225 cable systems in 2.1 million homes, and by the end of August, MTV was available in 2.5 million homes.
