Salacuse (1991) in his book Making Global Deals contends that “the challenge of international business negotiations is not just ‘getting to yes,’ but also staying there” (p. 148). The complexity of the global market and international differences require businesses to rethink not only the negotiation process but also the negotiated agreement. Perhaps international business negotiators are best served in considering renegotiation as a regular part of international trade rather than the exception. There are several factors that contribute to the need for international agreements to be renegotiated. Three major contributors to failed agreements are substantive issues, differences in general perspectives or communication styles, and an unstable world environment.
