When you read the word assess, do you think immediately of grading? Most teachers do. Grading is certainly an aspect of assessment, especially as it relates to the traditional classroom, but it is by no means the only—or even the most important—aspect of assessment. As Bigge, Stump, Spagna, and Silberman (1999) attest, “Assessment is much more than administering tests and achieving scores. It is gathering information to make decisions” (p. 151).
