Intervention research tests blueprints for assisting children with chronic conditions and their families. The scientific literature is replete with suggestions to use the results of descriptive studies to design interventions. Testing these interventions in experimental studies then contributes evidence regarding their effectiveness.

Experimental and quasi-experimental studies constituted 5% of published pediatric nursing research between 1980 and 1987 (Burke & Roberts, 1990) and approximately 10% between 1968 and 1992 (Hester, 1992).
