Sometimes poverty is blamed for degradation of the environment. However, a closer look at the sequence of events clearly shows that commercial exploitation of natural resources in large scale was the initial cause of natural resource degradation. The degradation of natural resources and continued dependence of poverty groups in large numbers on natural resources lead to the impression that poverty leads to degradation.
