In this chapter we set out the rationale for standards-based assessment and the need for teachers to understand the roles and functions of standards. We discuss ideas central to an understanding of standards and their relationship to curriculum, accountability, improvement and equity, and provide examples of how standards are represented and promulgated and how teachers use standards in making judgements about students' work.
