Chapter 9: Futures-Oriented Assessment
In this chapter we consolidate our position that it is time for the ‘masterful teacher’, using the facility of digital and emerging technologies, to engage with futures-oriented approaches to assessment. The key propositions presented earlier support our contention that assessment needs to be reconsidered in the light of current developments. We argue that with major international curriculum and standards-driven reform, policy developers, academics, teachers, students and the public need to be aware of the accountability demands and their effects on assessment policy and practice. We see this as a time of transition for assessment, with the merging of traditional modes of written examinations, school-based and teacher assessment with online, digitally mediated forms of assessment.
