    About the author

Jane Westergaard is an associate senior lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University. She teaches on programmes for students who plan to engage in employment in a range of helping professions including counsellors, mentors and coaches in education, health and social care settings. Jane developed and teaches on the BA (Hons) Counselling, Coaching and Mentoring, the Certificate in Supervision Studies, and the Advanced Certificate in Supervision Studies programmes. Jane is a qualified and practising UKRC-registered counsellor, working with young people and adult clients. This includes the setting-up of a counselling service for teachers in an Inner London secondary school. She also has experience of supervision spanning 20 years and has researched and published a range of academic papers on the topic. Currently Jane supervises head teachers, senior leaders, teachers, learning mentors, child protection teams, and others in a range of school settings across London and the south-east. She has spoken on the subject of counselling, coaching, mentoring and supervision at a number of national and international conferences. Jane’s current research focuses on exploring integrative approaches to counselling with young people, and she has written widely on this subject and published a range of texts focusing on counselling and supervision.

    Acknowledgements

A number of people have been key to the development and production of this text. First, I would like to thank my colleagues Alison Fielding and Barbara Bassot. Alison helped in early discussions to form the structure of the book, whilst Barbara authored Chapter 6 on her academic specialism, reflective practice. Thanks to you both.

Second, the content of this book would not offer the breadth, depth and practical-application element without Part II. I would like to thank the ten practitioners who gave up their time to provide such rich and detailed case studies – all examples from their own professional contexts. Thank you to:

    • Georgia Bentley – NHS community drug worker
    • Rebecca Corfield Tee – life-coach
    • Amy Cotgrove – learning support assistant
    • Sarah Hayesmore – care manager assistant in social services
    • James Hickman – teacher in a children’s hospital
    • Sally Hickman – trainee probation officer
    • Cindy Johnson – surgical nurse specialist
    • Deb Lee – telephone helpline counsellor
    • Carolyn Mumby – counsellor and coach therapist
    • Kim Walder – registered manager of a children’s home

Third, a debt of gratitude to my ‘critical friend’ Ruth Higgins, who has supported the writing process throughout and made valuable suggestions, all from an empathic, congruent and non-judgemental perspective, in keeping with the subject matter. Thank you Ruth.

Finally, I would like to thank the team at Sage who have given me their wholehearted professional support from development to final production. Many thanks to you all.
