We know that high quality professional learning can play a significant role in advancing student achievement. This book is aimed at school board members with a desire to deepen their understanding of professional learning as a means to improving their decision making and, ultimately, improving outcomes for educators and their students. Each chapter focuses on a critical decision point that boards frequently encounter. Through a combination of descriptive text, case vignettes, and activities, board members will cultivate a deeper understanding of each decision point, its connection to professional learning, and an enhanced capacity to confront problems.

A Story

Two years ago, the Sunset Valley School System adopted a new strategic plan, and one of the plan's strategic priorities was attracting, supporting, rewarding, and retaining the highest quality professional staff. At the recommendation of the superintendent, the school board is engaging in professional learning on this subject. At the invitation of Superintendent René Viejo, representatives from the business community and teachers’ and administrators’ organizations are also participating. Frank Ponder, a local professor with expertise in compensation matters, is facilitating the process. Over several weeks, the group has investigated many important subjects, including teacher induction, teacher evaluation, teacher leadership, and starting salaries. Tonight's session will begin the conversation on compensation strategies.
