Most of science, and nearly all investigations carried out by children, is concerned with change. Learning and understanding in science mean, with only a few exceptions, finding out how and why things change as they do. Understanding changes at anything more than a superficial level is impossible without the concept of energy. Although it is not always used directly in thinking and communicating about scientific issues, the concept of energy is always there in the background; a kind of unifying and supporting base for a great diversity of investigations and explanations in science.
