Ehmann, Freda (1839–1932)
Born in Germany in 1839, Freda (Loeber) Ehmann became known as the Mother of the California Olive Industry. She made her mark late in life. At age 56 she was poor and had recently buried her husband and 19-year-old daughter. Her only asset was a 20-acre orchard of olive trees she owned with her son, Edwin, near Oroville, California.
Olives were first brought to California by the Franciscan missionaries in the mid-1700s and had flourished in the Mediterranean-like climate of California's great Central Valley.
