Wells, Alice Stebbins (1873–1957)
The history of the Los Angeles Police Department is one of rich tradition and time-honored commitment. While many recent problems have plagued the organization, such as the Rodney King beating in 1991, the Rampart scandal of 2000, and the contemporary replacement of Chief Bernard Parks, the force has been able to successfully police its citizens effectively and honestly. While the makeup of the LAPD has undergone many facelifts over the past 100 years, perhaps no other person was more influential at implementing changes in 1910 within the department than Alice Stebbins Wells, the first woman to serve in the Los Angeles Police Department.
