The Republic of Panama is the southernmost country of Central America, with a population of 3,864,000 inhabitants as of 2013. Its economy is estimated to be 92nd in the world and third in Central America, with a GDP per capita of $15,900. Although the tourism industry has not figured prominently in the history of the country, Panama has been characterized by travel, movements, and migrations as a result of its strategic geopolitical location on the isthmus connecting North and South America.
