Iran is a country in southwestern Asia that is home to one of the oldest civilizations in the world and has a rich heritage of culture, art, nature, and fine food that it could exploit in the tourism sector. Etymologically, Iran derives from the middle Persian ērān and ērānšahr, terms used in the Sasanian Empire (224–651 CE).

Being the heart of the storied Persian Empire of antiquity, Iran was one of the most important countries along the ancient Silk Road.
