Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth-largest country in the world by area. With about 204 million inhabitants (2015 estimate), Brazil is a member of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) and plays a fundamental role in the political and economic life of Latin America.

Historically, the country has had large numbers of tourists, as part of important world conferences and mega sports events, including the 1950 FIFA World Cup; the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit in 1992; and its follow-up conference known as Rio+20 in 2012.
