Slum tourism is the activity of tourists, and those who guide them, in visiting slums, or other urban areas characterized by poverty and chaos, so that they can observe conditions faced by those living in such settlements. Slums are urban settlements with a high degree of poverty and housing that is usually grossly substandard. Slums are often thought of as a third-world phenomenon, but they are also found in more developed countries. Such tourism is often organized by professionals in the tourism industry and occurs in many urban locations throughout the world. Motivation for such tourism is multifaceted.
