In the influential article ‘Taking Care of Business’ (1969), Preble and Casey describe the sophisticated division of labour used by American drug dealers in order to minimize detection. Individuals are needed to import, distribute, dilute and portion the product, just as they are needed to sell to resellers, sell on the street, provide connections to dealers for compensation, take care of quality control or look out for the police.
