Vietnam is a country in Southeastern Asia with an estimated population of 94,348,835 in 2015. Independent since 939 CE, Vietnam has long placed warfare and warriors at the center of its society. From the mid-20th century onward, war has gained additional emphasis as the basis for legitimate leadership in Vietnam. The current Vietnamese government came to power by winning a series of wars against external and internal rivals and has made those victories the primary basis for its right to rule.
