Attunement is the ability for individuals in any form of relationship to be connected to and harmonious with one another. For maintaining intimacy in close relationships it is a necessity. In any interaction, an individual may recognize the thoughts, feelings, and nonverbal communication of another. This can take place between life partners, parents and children, friends, business partners, teachers and students, employers and employees, or even those in the service industry and their patrons. One party may be more attuned than another in a relationship. For example, a parent may attune to their child’s hurt or fear even when the child is unwilling to talk about it.
