Anxiety can be described as a basic human emotion that involves nervousness, worry, or fear of uncertainty toward a real or perceived event. It can be viewed on a continuum from being mild to severe. If severe enough, anxiety can also develop into a diagnosable mental health disorder if it begins to affect a person’s day-to-day functioning. This entry reviews the concept of anxiety, including symptoms, causes and risk factors, types of anxiety disorders, and treatment. The first section will explain the difference between regular anxiety and anxiety disorders.
