Structured Interviews

An interview is a formal meeting or conversation in which a person asks another person questions in order to obtain personal information. Interviews can be viewed along a continuum. At one end of the spectrum are unstructured interviews, which are a completely unplanned series of usually open-ended questions that can vary across interviewees. At the opposite end are structured interviews, which consist of a series of predetermined questions asked to interviewees in the same order each time, with no deviation from the interviewer. Semi-structured interviews involve a predetermined set of open-ended questions, allowing for the interviewer to explore responses in more detail. This entry focuses on the use of structured interviewing with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD).
