Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League

The Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA) is the first global organization concerned with the combined advancement of Africans, people of African descent, and the development of the African continent for that purpose. The relevance of this organization to African cultural heritage in North America is that it is one of the better examples of the efforts by the African diaspora to reconnect with and reclaim Africa as the homeland for all Africans. The various Black nationalist activities of the UNIA underscored the abilities of diasporan Africans in North America to successfully design and execute a global program for African development despite being restricted to socioeconomically disadvantaged positions.
