Storytelling: A System of Cultural Cohesion

In every society, there is a living culture that characterizes a people’s way of life and forms a system of cultural cohesion, benchmarked through communal identity and tradition. In traditional African societies, one of the ways in which a culture persists within its own society is through oral tradition, the art of sharing tales to preserve history and teach lessons. These traditions are passed on from generation to generation in the form of stories, sayings, songs, proverbs, and other cultural elements that are not usually written down or recorded. African diasporic folklore and storytelling are part of a rich legacy of intangible African heritage that serves as a vessel for cultural expression, adaptation, and lessons in survival.
