In its brief history, reggae music has made a huge impression on the world music scene, which is especially remarkable when considering that it originated from a tiny island in the Caribbean. From its Jamaican roots, reggae has developed into one of the foremost voices of the global oppressed, as witnessed in music sales, artistic efforts, and festivals worldwide. Although reggae did not begin in North America, influences from that continent have affected its evolution, and through more recent immigrants from the Caribbean and Canada, it has established a prominent presence there.
