Optimal psychology (OP) is one of the few personality theories that emerge from a cultural worldview that can be traced from classical African civilization to the present day. Most psychological theories have been developed based on a Western worldview, which unlike that of traditional African cultures, fragments, disintegrates, separates, and compartmentalizes facets of human experience as though they are unrelated. Optimal theory, in contrast, is based on a cultural worldview whose tenets foster a comprehensive, integrative approach to the study of the human experience. Linda James Myers developed the theory of OP in the early 1980s while grappling with the apparent incapacity of mainstream Western psychology to address the plethora of problems confronting humanity.
