Mental Health for Persons of African Ancestry

Most of the research that focuses on the mental health of persons of African descent has ignored the unique historical and cultural realities of that population. Although a large and, at some levels, very diverse group of persons do acknowledge African descent, they have, for the most part, had their mental and other health issues addressed from the perspectives of persons who do not acknowledge African descent. As a consequence, mainstream health perspectives often perpetuate further oppression and trauma by depending on culturally inappropriate mental health frameworks. Culturally syntonic analyses, strategies, and therapeutics must be used to address the mental and physical health of this population appropriately and effectively.
