The practice of medicine is as old as human beings’ efforts to find ways to heal themselves. In many traditional societies throughout the world, including those of Africa, the knowledge of ancient healing practices and remedies has been held as sacred and transmitted from generation to generation, down to the present day. Ample evidence exists that healing herbs and remedies were transplanted from Africa to North America and other parts of the world. Many of the ideas, methods of diagnosis, and modes of treatment ranging from surgery to the therapeutic use of medicinal plants have survived the test of time and have found a place in modern medical practice.
