Maat (pronounced Mah-aht’) is an ancient African cultural-spiritual system that emerged among the people of Kemet (ancient Egypt) and gave them instructions about how they should think, speak, and interact with one another. Maat ultimately provides divine guidance—the people of Kemet believed that even the Creator was guided by Maat. Maat is simultaneously a basic concept that provides instruction for human behavior and a complex concept that provides the path for inner (self) and outer (community) harmony. Maat thus serves cosmic, theological, and social purposes.
