Life Cycle, African Spiritual Concept of

A life cycle can be defined as a series of changes that a living organism goes through as it transitions through life, beginning at birth and ending at death. Each human grouping of people has its own way of making sense of this journey and its meaning to the individual and his or her society. The African life cycle has philosophical, cultural, and spiritual foundations that inform and influence human practices, rituals, and behaviors. Thus, for the person of African descent, the life cycle is significantly more than a set of biological markers or social benchmarks indicating that a particular chronological developmental threshold has been achieved.
