Blues aesthetics is the philosophical underpinning of the art music emanating from throughout Black popular culture. Aesthetics, as applied to music, is the manner in which we articulate our knowledge and understanding of music as organized, expressive sound. Blues aesthetics, then, offers the philosophical grounding for what aficionados experience when listening to a performance of musical thought rendered creatively through this sound. It forms the basis for the emotive appreciation shown by listeners for what is performed uniquely, in the moment, and owes its origin to a rich musical tradition with roots in West Africa and beyond to ancient Ethiopia, the cradle of human development.
