There has been no global organization uniting African people worldwide since the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of Marcus Garvey. As a result, African women and men, around the world, remain in a state of isolation. Moreover, this isolation prevents global networking, widespread solidarity, sharing of resources and ideas, and the emergence of a united voice. This set of conditions has ultimately led to individual and collective vulnerability and discouragement. This realization led Molefi Kete Asante and Ama Mazama to create Afrocentricity International, Inc. The organization was incorporated in the United States in January 2011 in the state of Pennsylvania.
