There is evidence to indicate that erudite psychologists existed within African cultures thousands of years ago. These psychologists wrote about insights into human development that Western science is only now “discovering” and “confirming” as true. Yet in modern times, over the past 50 years, innovations in psychological knowledge production have gone beyond the monoculturally hegemonic mainstream psychology of the West to rediscover a psychology that is congruent with the social and cultural realities of persons acknowledging African descent. This entry explores African psychology, including its evolution as an African-centered psychology in the African American context, using the term African-centered psychology to refer to practices both in African society and in the African diaspora.
