African Linguistic and Communication Continuities in the Caribbean Diaspora

The countries included in the North American Caribbean diaspora range from Belize in the northwest and the Bahamas in the northeast to Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana on the northern shores of South America. The histories of the individual countries are essentially similar or parallel. Properly speaking, the Caribbean diaspora derives from countries in which the official language is English, French, Spanish, and/or Dutch. The selection of countries included in this entry is further restricted to those countries in which English is the official language. Significant parallels exist in the other territories. In each case, the legacy of European colonialism has had a profound effect on linguistic experience as well as on specific cultural practices. All these have some bearing on communication practices.
