According to Dr. John Henrik Clarke, founding president the African Heritage Studies Association (AHSA), the aim of AHSA is to examine the history and culture of African people throughout the world and to use it to bring about the union of African people. AHSA evolved during the 1960’s Freedom movement and Black Studies movement.


During the 1968 African Studies Association Conference (ASA) held in Los Angeles, a group of African and African American participants, representing themselves collectively as the Black Caucus, came together to assess their role in the ASA.
