African American Images and Stereotypes

African Americans are viewed by others in terms of stereotypes that restrict them to various and controlled categories. African Americans rarely view themselves from that same point of view. However, the African American image stems from the image of the African. African stereotypes, in turn, affect the African American image. While much has been written on the Black image in the White mind, the image of African Americans depends almost entirely on the preconceptions of the viewer.
