Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy based on the assumptions that the human condition is a unified whole rather than simply the sum of its parts and that people are naturally predisposed to being healthy. Psychological distress is understood as arising out of withdrawal from awareness of our experience of body, self, or environment by fantasizing about the past or the future or relying on automatized habits in the present. Psychological health is understood as being the product of our innate homeostatic tendency, which is activated when we are aware of our current experience.
