A code of ethics is usually established by a professional order, as a way to protect the public and reputation of the professionals and their fields. To this end, there are various codes within the medical and mental health fields. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics, the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics, and the American Medical Association Code of Medical Ethics are a few examples.
