Dieting is a general term used to refer to a broad scope of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral phenomena involved in the pursuit of weight loss. It is a term that has been used as a catchall to describe a variety of very different attitudes and behaviors. Different definitions of dieting may involve clearly healthy dietary behaviors, such as eating fruits and vegetables, and/or clearly unhealthy behaviors, such as fasting and skipping meals. Furthermore, many individuals who endorse dieting experience cognitive and emotional feelings of food deprivation without engaging in objective reductions in caloric intake.
