One of the most salient characteristics of human life is emotion. Emotions color the way in which we make sense of ourselves and our surroundings. Affective processes are responsible for a plethora of behaviors, enacting and sustaining motivation. Research has identified important connections between affect and various dimensions of performance—such as task, organizational citizenship behavior, and counterproductive work behavior (CWB)—as well as turnover, creativity, and decision making, to name a few. Finally, the dynamic and contagious nature of emotion has propelled interest in its management. It has become increasingly important to look more closely at emotions in the workplace.
