Pornography
Pornography is sexually explicit material designed specifically for sexual arousal. Since at least the early nineteenth century, pornography and public discussions of it have been intertwined with debates about the definition of masculinity and the role of male sexuality in the United States.
Intense concern with pornography developed in the United States during the nineteenth century, when the market revolution created a middle class that defined itself and social stability in terms of self-control and self-restraint, and when urbanization and the growth of commercial capitalism raised fears about the erosion of traditional restraints on male morality.
