Components of a healthful lifestyle include a favorable, regular dietary intake and regular physical activity habits. Consistent breakfast and cereal consumption are determinants of a healthful lifestyle. These patterns of eating have been shown to be associated with positive health outcomes. This entry provides a review of the contributions of habitual breakfast consumption and focuses on breakfasts that include cereal, specifically in relation to nutrient delivery; health-related outcomes (BMI, levels of blood lipids, physical activity, and waist circumference); cognitive, academic, and behavioral outcomes; and family meals.
