Diversion Programs
Diversion seeks to replace formal justice proceedings with informal, less punitive proceedings. In broad terms, the goal of diversion is to keep a juvenile offender out of the juvenile justice system, remove a juvenile from the system at any time in the process, or simply discontinue the case against the alleged delinquent. Thus diversion can begin at the discretion of the police officer and continue through the intake, adjudication, and sentencing phases in the juvenile justice process. Diversion can help a juvenile avoid stigmatization as a criminal or delinquent as well as the inadvertent abuses of basic human rights and dignities that can occur in a detention setting.
