Theories of Delinquency, III. Psychological
Theorists have attempted to explain delinquent behavior from a variety of perspectives, but the psychological approach is most introspective in nature. This approach uses the knowledge of psychological theorists to analyze the minds and thought processes of individuals who engage in delinquent acts. Theories range from psychoanalysis and behaviorism to social learning and intelligence. From the notion of rewards and punishments, learned expectations and assimilation, and accommodation, a psychological presence in delinquent behavior is quite evident. But to what extent can we truly attribute psychological developments to crime, and exactly what do they mean?
