Poisonings are a problem that many families encounter in their lifetime. The definition of family in this context may include members of the immediate family, relatives, friends, and neighbors. Poison centers provide poison prevention material and educate families on how to poison proof their homes and make a safer home environment for all family members. Because more than 90% of all poisoning exposures called to poison centers occur in the family home, parents need to be educated on how to poison proof their homes and to call 1-800-222-1222 (toll-free poison center number) if a poisoning occurs.
